A Practical Guide to NDIS Home Modifications

Learn how occupational therapists assess homes, navigate funding, and implement modifications that keep participants safe and independent.

Why home modifications matter

Well-designed environments reduce falls, conserve energy and build confidence. For NDIS participants, the right set-up can be the difference between relying on others and living with independence.

Steps in the assessment journey

Our therapists start with a collaborative interview to understand daily routines, goals and existing barriers. A functional assessment follows, mapping out each space and identifying risks or friction points.

We capture measurements, photos and task analyses. These details support the Assistive Technology or Home Modifications report submitted to the NDIA.

Working with builders and suppliers

Once the NDIA approves funding, we partner with licensed builders and suppliers who meet NDIS requirements. Our therapists remain involved to ensure the design aligns with clinical recommendations and participant preferences.

Tips for participants and supporters

Document daily challenges leading up to your assessment - photos or notes provide useful context.

Gather previous reports or diagnoses to streamline evidence gathering.

Ask questions. The process can feel technical, so we prioritise plain-language explanations and clear timelines.
